Our Compass middle school students stole the show at the State House last week!  We showed up in force with 19 Compass student leaders, which made quite the impression on all of the VIPs present.  Our students were positive and brave.

At the RI State House, Compass middle school students…

  • shook hands and introduced themselves to adults they didn’t know.
  • challenged the representative from Walmart to encourage his organization “to procure ethically-produced products” (their words, not mine!)
  • spotted Governor Raimondo (who was not part of the event), chased her down and swarmed her to secure a photo opp and invite her to Eco Fair.
  • participated in an amazing debate on floor of the House of Representatives about banning plastic bags

The chaperones and I literally BEAMED all morning long as our hearts swelled with Compass pride.  Go Compass!

RI Green Student Leadership Council: At the event, participants were invited to officially apply for the Rhode Island Green Student Leadership Council.  The application link is here and is available to all middle school students, even if they are not on Compass Student Voice.

This Fall, the Adventurers visited The Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association for their first field trip of the school year.  It was a busy day, packed with fun-filled activities.  From studying leaves to trudging into the river to collect macro invertebrates, the Adventurers’ put their observation skills as well as four out of their five senses to the test (no macro invertebrates were taste-tested!)  After a quick lunch, the Adventurers found themselves stretching their legs for an intense game of “Flash Frozen Critters” – a fast paced game having to do with the food chain.  To end their day, the Adventurers learned about water run-off/pollution through the use of an enviroscape model.  The Adventurers rated this field trip a five-star experience!

The Compass School seeks to fostering a love for the environment in each of its students.  One of the ways that we achieve this mission is to dedicate time to outdoor learning.  Recently, our school hosted “Camp Day”, which offered an opportunity for our students to connect with one another in a different way.  We embraced the multi-age component of our charter by partnering our younger students with mentor buddies as they ventured through a series of activities.  As you can see by the smiles in each picture, the day was a hit!

A Journey to the State House
At Compass, we see our students as change-makers.  We recognize that they need to understand how the systems around them function in order to make meaningful contributions and impact positive change.

Our Discoverers recently traveled to Providence to bring their social studies learning to life.  Students have been studying how bills become laws.  During their visit to the State House, they toured the historic building, sat where our representatives sit to vote, and even got to cast their own practice ballots.

Not only did they learn about the process, but our students also schmoozed our own newly elected representative Carol McEntee of District 33.  Our students were such great ambassadors from of the Compass School that McEntee wanted to learn more about us!

Cheers to Ms. Heidi, Mr. Drew, Ms. Elissa and the parent chaperones who made this great trip possible!

The Compass School Navigators (7th and 8th grade) enjoyed a 3-day camping experience at Camp Conanicus in Exeter from September 23rd – 25th.  The experience was jam-packed and included activities such as:

  • leadership training
  • nature walks
  • clay pot making
  • swimming
  • kayaking
  • skits and role playing
  • mushroom hunting with experts Ryan Bouchard and Emily Schmidt
  • and more!

Student conduct on the trip was exceptional.  “This is the best camping trip ever!” was reported by students, parent chaperones and staff alike.

A special thanks to the parent chaperones and the Navigator teachers: Ms. Harlyn, Ms. Hilary, Ms. Heather and Ms. Holly for their dedication, planning, and for forfeiting 3 days of sleep!
